A different type of system

Overview

Systems are everywhere. Frequently as system designers, we focus on the enterprise; something across the entirety of a company. It’s used to bring consistency across all facets of the experience. And Abbott has one of those, but this wasn’t that.

The subdivision of Abbott focused on marketing Neuromodulation products was going through an upgrade of their content management system from AEM 6.1 to 6.4. They took this opportunity to look at what existed within the site currently and rethink it.

I love the Abbott design system as a tool and it was great to experience this one from the other side. I found it to be a very usable system. Since they were also making the move from Sketch to Figma, it was a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the features and benefits that platform provides. And as a more developed and confined system, they have a bunch of more complex components that are specific to the way the company does business and want people to experience it consistently. It was a good testament to what a system could be.
